The Latimer Archive is the permanent, public artifact of the Prize. It is held jointly by Cooper Hewitt and the Smithsonian, and constructed in four formats, text, object, film, and voice, so the work of each laureate can be encountered without intermediary, across generations.

Four formats

One laureate, four enduring artifacts.

Every laureate enters the Archive through four deliberate artifacts. None of them is press. None of them is marketing. Each is built to outlive the cycles of attention, to be read, watched, or heard by someone who has never come across the laureate's name.

The Citation

A short, signed citation and a long-form scholarly essay.

02 · Object

The Deposit

An object chosen by the laureate, accessioned by Cooper Hewitt.

03 · Film

The Portrait

A documentary chapter, produced for YouTube.

04 · Voice

The Conversation

A recorded long-form conversation, deposited with the Smithsonian.

Stewardship

Held jointly with the Smithsonian and Cooper Hewitt.

The Archive is not owned by the Prize. It belongs, in perpetuity, to the public, and is cared for by Cooper Hewitt and the Smithsonian under a joint custodial agreement. The Prize keeps editorial standards; the museums keep conservation and access.

Every artifact is catalogued under the Smithsonian's open-access policy. Where the laureate consents, the conversation and the portrait are released for public use. Where they do not, the record is preserved under embargo and released on a schedule.

Access

How the Archive will be opened.

The Archive opens in phases. The first, in 2027, releases the citations and the conversation transcripts of the inaugural class. The second, in 2028, releases the film portraits and the accessioned objects. From 2029 onward, the Archive grows by one class a year, read aloud, in full, at every Convocation.

A digital reading room, quiet, searchable, museum-grade, is in design with Cooper Hewitt's Interaction Lab. It opens in the autumn of 2028.

The Fellows Program

An apprenticeship, not a fellowship.

Each cohort is no more than nine, one for every chair of the Prize. Fellows are chosen for the trajectory of their work, not the length of their résumé. Each Fellow is paired with a senior laureate as a long-term counselor, given an unrestricted stipend for the year, and invited into the private convenings of the Prize.

The Fellows are the institution's long memory, still in the making.
